Strangers Among Us
“Home sweet home,” Caroline Parker muttered under her breath as she pulled into her family’s driveway. “More like hell house,” she amended before she took a deep breath and held it. She parked behind her mother’s beat up white Sentra and shut off the engine. She slumped back in her seat and then slowly exhaled.

Through the small opening in the windows of her car, she could hear other cars winding through the streets of their subdivision, music blaring from some unknown source and kids playing somewhere down the street. Despite the late hour, it was still light out and it seemed as if things were still in full swing.

To Caroline, it didn’t seem fitting. It was nearly half past nine. The sun should be long gone, and things should be winding down, but the lightning bugs were only just now starting to come out of hiding and the quiet she associated with twilight was nowhere in sight. Of course, it was summer, and she supposed that made all the difference.

It took a Herculean effort to force her eyes open. One eyelid protested, a searing pain ripping through her already aching body, while her other eye blinked several times to clear the blur that seemed to surround her.

She probably should have been confused, but Auden Blake had felt this all before. She was familiar with the heady scent associated with a busy hospital and the sounds of various machines – several of which were probably hooked up to her at this very moment.

Instead of taking a moment to orient herself to her surroundings, she took a moment to orient herself to the pain. That was always the hardest part – dealing with the pain. No matter how hard she tried, she never could quite push the pain to the back of her mind. She could pretend it wasn’t there and put on the necessary brave face – the one that said, ‘Oh, I’m fine, just fine’ all while wishing for death to come and take her.
